Diabetes is a significant cause of lower limb loss. According to the American Diabetes Association, worldwide, a person loses a limb due to diabetes-related complications every 30 seconds. South Carolina has a high rate of diabetes and, unfortunately, one Richland County zip code has one of the highest rates of diabetic amputations in the country. 

Vascular surgeon Brett B. Fowler, MD, was interviewed by WIS TV about the causes and how those with diabetes can protect themselves.
