Today, we begin a blog series about the features of our new patient care tower. The 545,000 square foot project is the largest hospital expansion in South Carolina history. The 10-story tower is the new home of the Mother/Baby department, eight operating rooms, six floors for surgical, obstetric, ICU and oncology patients, enhanced dining options, a spacious atrium, educational space and a serenity garden.

First up, the serenity garden. Outside the doors of the new tower atrium is a beautiful patio.

The Lexington Medical Center Volunteer Auxiliary - which is made up of more than 300 men and women who donate their time at our hospital - donated funds for us to design and build the garden.

From a calming fountain to beautiful landscaping, it's a peaceful place for families and friends to spend time while a loved one is in the hospital.

Throughout the garden, some of the brick tiles have inspirational and comforting quotes. One is from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and reads, "Only in the darkness can we see the stars."
