COVID-19 Surges at Lexington Medical Center

Nurses in COVID protective gear

Aug. 9 2021

Lexington Medical Center has seen a dramatic increase in hospitalizations in recent weeks. On August 4, WIS TV visited one of our COVID ICUs to understand the gravity of the situation and the severity of illness patients are experiencing from the Delta variant.

On this day, there were 99 patients in our hospital with COVID-19 - the youngest was 22 years old. A month earlier, there were only four patients.

Brent Powers, MD, Chief Medical Officer, encouraged patients to get the COVID-19 vaccine to avoid hospitalization and slow the spread of the virus. Research shows being vaccinated reduces the likelihood of becoming infected by the virus by eight-fold and reduces the risk of hospitalization due to the virus by twenty-five-fold.
