NBC Nightly News: Inside Lexington Medical Center As COVID Cases Rise

Jul. 28 2021

In July 2021, NBC News returned to Lexington Medical Center to report on the sudden surge in COVID-19 patients at the hospital.

NBC's Ellison Barber first reported on the COVID-19 pandemic from Lexington Medical Center in July 2020 - exactly one year earlier. Before the COVID-19 vaccine was available.

The difference she saw this time is that hospitalized patients are much younger. Many patients hospitalized now are in their twenties, thirties and forties. Some have young families. And the vast majority are unvaccinated.

Philip Keith, MD, a critical care physician treating patients in the ICUs, shares his concern over the spike in cases, noting eery similarities to the sudden rise last July.

One of Dr. Keith's patients, Almonzoe Cromer, spent nearly two months in the hospital, much of that time on a ventilator. Though he was discharged several months ago, he is still struggling with the affects of the virus. He had the opportunity to be vaccinated before getting sick, but passed it up. A decision he regrets.

Now, he encourages everyone he knows to get vaccinated.
