Healthy Food Choices for the Summer

I think we can all agree – It is hot outside! And, as the temperatures rise, it seems like our energy levels drop.

If that is how you feel, the foods you choose during the summer can help you restore and maintain your energy.

Here is what I suggest:

•Eat Breakfast – Eating breakfast has been shown to get your metabolism going making you more alert and ready to face the day. Choose whole-grain or high fiber cereal with fat-free milk and fruit, yogurt with fruit and granola, or scrambled egg with whole wheat toast and 100% fruit juice.

•Include Protein – Research has shown that the foods that restore your sense of well-being are high in protein and low in concentrated carbohydrates like sugar and white bread.

•Avoid Sugary Foods – Sweet treats and sugary beverages all increase the blood sugar rapidly but then it plunges leaving you tired and hungry.

•Eat Smaller Meals and include Snacks – Eating frequent small meals and snacks feeds your body a constant source of energy. Include protein with your snacks, such as whole grain crackers and low-fat cheese, greek yogurt and fruit, or vegetables with hummus.

And finally, drink water and low-sugar beverages. Dehydration can negatively affect your energy level.
