Fashion Meets Colon Cancer!
LMC Vice President of Community Relations Barbara Willm is one of a handful of South Carolina leaders featured on a series of billboards posted around South Carolina this month to raise awareness about colon cancer.
Other participants include Patricia-More Pastides, wife of USC President Harris Pastides.
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Colon Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. This year, 2,000 South Carolinians will be diagnosed with colon cancer; 800 will die of the disease. But it’s also one of the most preventable forms of cancer, and curable when detected early. The best way to screen for colon cancer is a colonoscopy. In general, people should begin colon cancer screenings at age 50.
Each of the billboard participants is wearing clothes designed by celebrity designer Carmen Marc Valvo, who is a colon cancer survivor himself. Valvo will be a special guest at the Unmasking Colon Cancer Gala this Saturday night at Coplon’s in Columbia. The black tie event will include a fashion show of dresses from Valvo’s Spring 2011 collection. Lexington Medical Center is a proud sponsor of the event. Proceeds benefit colon cancer research in South Carolina. Click here for tickets.
