The Importance of Regular Checkups with A Primary Care Physician

By Daniel H. Dunbar, MD
Chapin Family Practice, a Lexington Medical Center physician practice

An annual physical with a primary care physician is a good opportunity for your doctor to review routine health maintenance such as immunizations and important screenings. And, for people who don’t go the doctor often, it’s a chance to examine healthy behaviors, weight control and family risk factors.

Regular physicals can identify issues and conditions including high blood pressure, heart murmurs, heart rhythm issues and certain types of cancer. Your doctor can also advise you about what types of medicine to take or avoid. These issues, when treated early or monitored, can prevent much more serious illnesses, including strokes and heart attacks.

The benefit of a family medicine physician is that we’re uniquely trained to see patients in all age ranges. And we build relationships with all of your family members, get to know their personalities and expectations of care, and analyze behavior and risk factors in the context of the whole family.

Family practice physicians work together with their patients and staff to ease pain and suffering, guide patients in their health care decisions and strategize for long-term health. We enjoy the unique opportunity to care for generations of family members over their lifetime.

Chapin Family Practice Celebrates 35 Years

This month, Chapin Family Practice celebrates serving the Chapin community for more than 35 years. The practice opened its doors in 1982 when Joseph Evans, MD, took over a rural health clinic in Chapin. It moved to its current office at 1612 Chapin Road in 1990 and expanded the building in 1999. As Chapin Family Practice continued to work to meet the needs of its fast-growing community, its providers decided to join Lexington Medical Center in 2005.

“We have experienced significant growth over the years, which has allowed our practice to be successful and fulfill our mission of helping those in our community. Because of the strong physician network within Lexington Medical Center, we can provide better benefits to our staff and better access and resources for our patients,” said Johnette Kinard, practice manager.

From a single physician at a rural clinic to a six-provider practice in the hospital’s network of care, Chapin Family Practice provides comprehensive care to patients of all ages, including adult and pediatric well visits, minor orthopaedic care and surgeries, pulmonary function testing and stress testing. Dr. Evans still practices full time at Chapin Family Practice, alongside Daniel H. Dunbar, MD; James P. Phillips, MD; J. Manuel Venegas, MD; Betty Pelletier, ANP; and Lauren Powell, DNP, FNP-C. And the practice is still growing.

“We have been blessed to have had many wonderful providers and staff work in our practice. Many of them have been here for more than 20 years, and all of them have personally helped shape Chapin Family Practice into what it is today,” said Johnette.

The dedication of the staff and providers at Chapin Family Practice extends outside the practice setting as well. They volunteer their time and expertise in the community by offering free and discounted camp physicals and serving at the local free medical clinic. Several providers participate in medical mission trips in the U.S. and abroad.

Chapin Family Practice is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is accepting new patients. For more information about the services available at the practice, visit ChapinFamilyPractice.com
